Official Veterinarian

As an Official Veterinarian (OV), you will operate as the Team Leader within the plant, overseeing the inspection team and ensuring the efficient and consistent delivery of Official Controls, as outlined in the Manual for Official Controls (MOC). This role involves line management, technical leadership, and ensuring compliance with food safety and animal welfare standards. You will also be responsible for health and safety management at the plant level and for building strong relationships with the Food Business Operator (FBO) and other stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the plant inspection team, providing technical advice and direction to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

  • Conduct ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections of animals for slaughter.

  • Verify animal welfare compliance and ensure high standards of animal handling and transportation.

  • Assess food chain information, slaughter hygiene standards, traceability systems, and food safety management systems.

  • Ensure that the FBO meets all legislative requirements through their own food safety management procedures.

  • Oversee the performance and competency development of Meat Hygiene Inspectors (MHIs), Meat Technicians (MTs), and Plant Inspection Assistants (PIAs).

  • Provide coaching and support to the plant inspection team and ensure compliance with technical standards.

  • Support trainee MHIs, PIAs, NOVs, and veterinary students in their practical training.

  • Manage staff performance, attendance, and leave approvals at the plant level.

  • Implement Health & Safety policies, conduct risk assessments, and investigate any workplace incidents.

  • Work collaboratively with FBOs, government agencies, and local authorities to maintain compliance.

  • Take fair and proportionate enforcement actions in line with risk-based procedures.

  • Act as an expert witness in legal cases where required.

  • Undertake on-farm TB testing of cattle and submission of associated test results (following appropriate training and authorisation).


Skills & Experience Required

  • Education: RCVS-accredited veterinary degree.

  • RCVS registration or eligibility to obtain it.

  • Experience: Training will be provided, but previous experience in a similar role is desirable.

  • English proficiency: Advanced written and spoken English (UKVI IELTS Academic – minimum level 7 in all parts, if applicable).

  • Driving licence: Category B (mandatory) with a minimum of one year of driving experience.
