Location: Hybrid (3 days on-site in Whitehaven, Cumbria or Warrington, Cheshire; 2 days remote)


Contract: 12-month term, inside IR35, renewable


Job Description:Our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior/Lead Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design projects for the Sellafield Nuclear Plant. This role involves managing complex engineering tasks, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and driving cross-disciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality mechanical designs and overseeing their implementation.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage mechanical designs, including:

    • Fabrication

    • Machining

    • Surface Treatments

    • Metrology and Reporting

  • Produce and review technical specifications, safety cases, and engineering calculations.

  • Conduct risk assessments, implement ALARP principles, and ensure adherence to nuclear safety standards.

  • Oversee manufacturing design, functional testing, and on-site commissioning.

  • Lead design reviews, manage associated risks, and allocate resources effectively to meet budget and schedule.

  • Mentor and provide leadership to engineers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality work.

  • Ensure compliance with laws, standards, and operational requirements throughout the design and implementation process.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (required).

  • Professional: Chartered Engineer status (preferred).

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 5 years in mechanical design roles.

    • At least 2 years in regulated, quality-assured systems within the nuclear sector.

    • Proven leadership experience in managing design projects and engineering teams.

  • Skills:

    • Expertise in mechanical design tools, standards, and methodologies.

    • Strong knowledge of manufacturing design, safety testing, and implementation.

    • Proficiency in risk assessment and regulatory compliance.

    • Familiarity with HAZOP processes and ALARP principles.
